Obituary

Victor Kent Lawson Jr.

Victor "Vic" Kent Lawson Jr., age 63, a lifetime resident of Colville, WA passed away on March 8, 2024. He was born on August 20, 1960 in Colville, the youngest of Victor Kent and Mary Lauretta (Slentz) Lawson.

Vic was born with cerebral palsy. At age 3, he began receiving therapy for his physical challenges at the Cerebral Palsy Grotto School in Western Washington. He learned skills that allowed him to walk, speak, and return home at the age of 6 to begin grade school back home in Colville. While attending Colville High School, Vic was proud to serve as manager for the varsity football team. He graduated in 1980 after making lifelong friends with fellow students and staff members. Following graduation, Vic moved to Spokane to learn medical billing. He boarded in a home close to Spokane Community College and walked to class daily. After completing courses, Vic returned to Colville and began working for his brothers, Terry and Roger, in their Chiropractic Clinic. With the opening of Walmart in Colville, he decided to switch careers and work as a Walmart greeter for several years. He cherished the relationships he developed with the Colville Community by offering a big smile, brief conversation, and occasional joke to those who entered the store. As he aged and recognized his increasing limitations, his work became volunteer based, and he moved from independent living to facilities that helped him ease into dependency. Vic loved volunteering for Kiwanis, Children's Miracle Network, Special Olympics, and Relay for Life to name a few. He was known for his ability to sell tickets for the Kiwanis BBQ in the park and then handing out ice cream during the event. He was a socialite and the life of the party during card games, community events, and gatherings with family and friends. Vic was a member of Grace Bible Church and participated in several bowling leagues over the years with the help of his aiming ramp. He challenged himself to create amazing macramé folding chairs, lace leather wallets, and paint ceramic figurines and mugs that he entered in the fair and then gave away as gifts with lots of love.

Vic had an enormous heart. He loved hugs and kisses and welcomed questions from curious little minds about his disability. Friends and family could count on a phone call, letter, or card from Vic for each birthday or whenever he thought of them, which was often. He became a Colville landmark of kindness and compassion in humanity and was an instantaneous friend, well known for his intellect, quick wit, and prankster tendencies. He lifted spirits, created smiles, and inspired goodness and grins every day for those who graced his presence. Vic was an inspiration to everyone, and his example of perseverance, humility, and love helped others keep their own life challenges in perspective.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Vic and Mary Lawson; brother, Terry Lawson and nephew, Heath Lawson.

Vic is survived by his brothers, Larry Lawson (Becky) and Roger Lawson (Kerry); sister, Vickie Hedrick (Dale); sister-in-law, Kelly Lawson, all of Colville, WA, numerous nieces and nephews and a host of extended family and friends.
