Steve was born on March 8th, 1952, in Colville to Elliott (Montie) Heater and Winifred (Winie) Gemmell. He was the second oldest of four children and the eldest of the three boys. Steve met Nancy Nelson (Garvey) in 1973 and they were married on September 20th, 1975. They made their family home just outside of Colville, WA.

He loved being around water with a fishing pole in his hands or in the mountains on a hunting adventure. Many of his prized hunting trophies were taken with his son Cody by his side.
