Sonna Lee Nixon, age 81, a 35-year resident of the Colville, WA area, passed away on February 5, 2025 at her home. Sonna was born on August 5, 1943 in Tonasket, WA the daughter of William Kenneth and Gretchen (Sehorn) Gliddon.
Sonna was raised in Tonasket where she attended school through the twelfth grade. She graduated with the class of 1961 from Tonasket High School and then moved to Spokane, WA. While in Spokane, Sonna attended the Kinman Business University. She then moved to Yakima, WA and began working at the local K-Mart. Soon she held the position of department manager. One day, she assisted a man looking for work clothing. They began dating and she realized, he was her Knight in shining armor. His name is Donald Nixon and they exchanged vows and began a marriage that lasted over 46 years. They resided for nearly a decade in Auburn, WA, before moving to Lake Taps, WA. Due to the decline in health of her father, Sonna and Don relocated to Waconda, WA to assist in his care and with the needs of the family ranch. Sonna also worked in housekeeping at the Klondike Motel in Republic while in Waconda. She and Don made a final move to the Colville area in 1989. They have resided in the Colville area for the past 35 years. Sonna worked many of those years at Walmart in Colville where she began as a night stocker and retired in 2011 as a department manager. Sonna enjoyed working in and around her home in her retirement.
Sonna had a love for the outdoors and pets in need of help. She and her family shared the outdoors together on camping trips over the years. She also offered her heart to animals in need of good homes and took a fond interest in the care offered by the Colville Animal Sanctuary. She enjoyed playing pool and often took home the winning title at more than one tournament. Sonna loved to fill the quiet time of the day reading. She read books of all genres and style with an avid desire to learn and experience adventure from her EZ-chair.
Sonna was preceded in death by six of her nine siblings.
She is survived by her husband, Donald Nixon, at the home; children, Phil Kurtz of Stevenson, WA, Gwyn Kurtz of Chewelah, WA, Mark Wilsey of Wenatchee, WA, Anna Lee Vicari of Aberdeen, WA; brothers, Rocky Gliddon of Republic, WA, Clancy Gliddon of Waconda, WA; step-sons, Jim Nixon (Jami) of Colville, WA and Kevin Nixon (Lisa) of Desert Aire, WA; numerous nieces, nephews and a host of extended friends and family.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Sonna will be laid to rest with her family at the Waconda Cemetery following cremation. Memorial contributions may be given to the Colville Animal Sanctuary. Please visit the online memorial and sign the guestbook at www.danekasfuneralchapel.com.
