Obituary

Sandra Marie "Sandy" Carl, a longtime resident of Chewelah, WA passed away on April 8, 2023 in Spokane, WA at the age of 81.  Sandy was born on October 27, 1941 in Tacoma, WA the daughter of Harold and Elsa Marie (Holm) Cook.

She was raised in Tacoma and attended Franklin Pierce High School.  Sandy graduated in 1959 and 2 days after graduation, she married Richard Rogers, a young serviceman based at Fort Lewis.  They immediately moved to southern California where they began a family. Richard supported the growing family in the banking field while  Sandy worked in the home enjoying her role as a homemaker.  In 1965, they returned to Tacoma.  Three years later, Sandy and Richard parted ways.  Sandy then found her passion in farming with a special interest in dairy farming.  She owned and worked on farms in Menlo, WA and then escaped to Sedro Wooley for a couple of years before moving to Addy, WA.  Sandy dairy farmed full time in Addy from 1978 to 1986.  She retired from farming and returned to Western Washington where she worked various occupations within the medical field.  In 2010, she recognized a growing need for care and made a final move and returned to the Chewelah community.  She has resided in Chewelah with her daughter and son-in-law, Rhonda and Ron Christian for the past 13 years.  She was also able to resume farming on a smaller scale as lead "hen" and flock leader of her chickens.

Sandy embraced the opportunity to spend the remaining years in the comfort and care of Chewelah, a small community where she felt at home.  She was fiercely independent and maintained her driver's license to her last day.  Sandy read avidly in her retirement and enjoyed the stories of Louis L'Amour along with books about the misdeeds of political figures and the super lives of dogs. But her all time favorite book, "Walking Home" , a story of hiking the Pacific Crest Trail was written by her son, Rick Rogers. Equally proud of her daughter, Rhonda, who is committed to supporting and guiding the community's youth through school and sports. Sandy had strong political beliefs and knew her opinion was worth sharing.  Kind hearted… strong willed… good cook, with a flair for tomato-based swiss steak and many other family favorites, Sandy gave of her heart openly through her care of others with a subtle sensitivity to her own needs and concerns.  Sandy was active in the DHIA, the National Dairy Herd Information Association for many years with an inclination to the Holstein Friesian breed.

Sandy was preceded in death by her parents and younger sister Debbie Van Lierop.

She is survived by her older brother Larry Cook (Mary) of Vancouver, WA, her sons, Richard "Rick" Rogers (Monica) and grandson Matthew of Conway, WA, Randall "Randy" "Buck" Rogers (Lisa) of Maple Valley, WA, and grandchildren Lance Rogers, Carl Rogers, Eric Rogers, Thomas Wicks, Annie Wicks, James Ruttler and Allison Muhlbauer, daughter Rhonda Christian (Ron) of Chewelah, WA and grandchildren, Reid Christian and Rachelle Christian-Mallon; six great grandchildren and five nieces and nephews.
