Russell "Russ"
Lynn Mckinnon
Aug 16, 1954 — Aug 24, 2024
Rice
Russell Lynn McKinnon, of Rice, Washington, passed away on August 24, 2024, just days after his 70th birthday. He was born on August 16, 1954 in Seattle, and grew up in Burien, graduating from Glacier High School in 1972.
In 1973, Russ joined the Navy and was stationed in Oak Harbor at NAS Whidbey Island, where he spent four of the most fun years of his life. There he made many lifelong friends and met his future wife, Lorinda. After leaving the Navy in 1977, the couple moved to South Seattle, where they married and started their family.
Russ became an oiler at Ness Cranes, quickly earning his place as a crane operator. But even with long hours of work, responsibilities, and parenting, Russ always found time to go fishing and hunting, keeping the freezer full for his family. Many happy hours were spent on Washington and Oregon rivers in his boat—with his wife; a friend; or simply by himself.
Russ retired at the age of 52, and he and Lorinda moved to Eastern Washington, where they settled into country life with enthusiasm. Fishing gave way to hunting, and Russ was in his element, with trophy mounts on the wall to prove it. A proficient archer and excellent marksman, Russ took pleasure in target shooting and mentoring others, as well.
Tough and rugged, Russ was born two hundred years too late; he was a mountain man at heart. His strength extended to his personality as well, and there are many, many stories to be told by co-workers, family, and friends. Everyone knew where they stood with Russ. He was generous with advice and wisdom, incredibly loyal, and showed his big heart to those close enough to see beyond the exterior.
He was a wonderful father. Weekends were spent playing catch in the yard, exploring the outdoors, or simply taking the long route home to sing along to oldies. At every sporting event, dance recital, or school play, his children knew he would be there cheering them on, in one of his few "nice" shirts. The simplest of activities created a lifetime of wonderful memories.
Russ was preceded in death by his father, Howard McKinnon, his mother, Florence McKinnon, and his sister Pegi Tyler. He is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Lorinda, sons Douglass (Michelle) McKinnon, Dean McKinnon, daughter Brenna McKinnon, brother Scott McKinnon, and sister Nancie Bentz.
He was also the proud grandfather of Sophie McKinnon, Taunalee Cline, and Mack Cline. We know he will always be watching over them and the new baby who will be arriving this winter. He relished his role of "Bah", teasing and teaching . . . and loving. His memory will live on in their hearts.
A true legend in his own time, Russ was deeply respected by many, and will be greatly missed. At his request, there will be no formal service.
