Richard H Hurst
Richard (Dick) H Hurst, a lifetime area resident, passed away October 1, 2022, in Spokane, WA at the Northpoint Memory Care, where he believed that he was still building and remodeling homes. He was born to Alexander (Murphy) and Irene Hurst on December 6 th , 1933, in Portland, OR, weighing over 14 pounds. Richard's personality and stature continued to be a large presence throughout his life. He will be missed dearly.
Richard Hurst graduated from Kettle Falls High School in 1951, and then he joined the US Army. He was in the US Army during the Korean war. He met Louise McCorquodale (Haag) and her daughters Marie and Shirly while he was stationed at Fort Wolters in Texas. Richard and Louise married in 1958 and moved their family back to Boyds, WA in 1959. Shortly thereafter sons Duncan and Steve were born.
Richard became a contractor, he built, remodeled and salvaged many homes in Ferry, Stevens and Pend Oreille Counties. During the peak of Richard's construction career in one year he and his four-man crew were able to start and complete 34 homes. Richard was 78 years old when he built his last home.
In 1970, Richard married Lou Hollinberger. They built their home on Murphy's pond and lived there with Lou's two daughters Angie Kirschner and Rebakka Susso. During this time, he continued his career in the construction industry.
In 1986, Richard met Sarah Steiner who he loved and she shared his love and enjoyment in sailing and traveling throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, and went on numerous cruises. Richard was a founding member of the Rickey Point Sailing Club. Richard and Sarah competed in 30 regattas and won or placed in approximately 12 of them.
Richard loved his dogs, all of whom were named Clips.
Bobby Miller and Richard Schilling were Richard's "bad" friends, and they shared many adventures and misadventures with him.
Richard was preceded in death by both parents and two sisters, Suzette Tucker and Nancy Anderson. Richard is survived by Sarah Steiner; daughter's Marie Elliott (Brian Cook) and Shirly (Ray) Nevin, son's Duncan (Renate) Hurst and Steve (Alice) Hurst. Stepdaughter's Angie Kirschner and Rebekka Susso. Grandchildren, Lallah Marston, Dorothy Marston (Justin Breitkreutz), Duncan (Victoria) Nevin, Jennifer (Joel) Walters, Rebecca (Beau) Fussell, Stephanie (David) Croppi, Jeff Hurst, and Josh (Mariah) Hurst. Sisters Joan Negu and Carol Roper. And 14 great grandchildren and numerous Nieces and Nephews.
Funeral services for Mr. Richard Hurst will be held Saturday October 8 th beginning at 10 a.m. at Danekas Funeral Chapel in Colville, WA, followed by a private family graveside service. You are welcome to join the family at Kettle River Grange following the service for a potluck to share stories and memories.
