In Loving Memory
Richard Glenn "Dick" Smith
Richard Glenn "Dick" Smith, a loving husband, father, and grandfather, was accepted into the arms of the Lord with his loving wife, Lorene, his stepdaughter, Deborah, and son-in-law, Bob by his side on September 14, 2023 in Addy Washington. Dick was born on January 13, 1930 in Wasco, California to John and Donna Marie (Brown) Smith.
The son of a farmer, Dick spent his childhood years in California, and was an accomplished athlete in several areas, namely in track and field. His number one year best high jump record was unmatched for many years, and he even went on to train for the Olympics with the Olympic Club in San Francisco.
On December 17, 1971, Dick would marry the love of his life, Lorene Heupel, and the two would begin their lives together. Dick would retire from his job as a telephone complex systems installer a few years later, following suit of his daughter Rachel, Dick and Lorene would relocate to Washington. The pair settled in Ione, and would go on to develop their property in Addy in 1979, with Dick carefully designing the home and shops; he constructed a garage, complete with a honeymoon suite above, and a hay barn that would eventually be converted into a cottage.
One of the things that brought Dick some of the greatest joy in life was kids, whether they were his grandkids or someone else's. Fondly referred to as "the cookie grandpa" at church, Dick always made sure to have cookies for the church kids, and seeing their faces light up with excitement was a highlight of his weeks.
Dick was preceded in death by his parents, John and Donna Smith. He is survived by the love of his life, Lorene Smith; his three daughters, Rachel, Laura (Randy), and Linda (Bob); his stepchildren, Deborah (Robert), and Jeff (Kellie); and 5 grandchildren; along with numerous church friends and family who will miss his kind hearted nature dearly.
A graveside service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, October 20, 2023 at the Riverside Cemetery in Ione, Washington. Please visit the online memorial website and sign his guestbook at danekasfuneralchapel.com. Danekas Funeral Chapel is entrusted with Dick's care.
