"Clancy" Bauman

Chewelah
Herschel Clarence Bauman
"Clancy"
Herschel "Clancy" Clarence Bauman, age 87, a 50-year resident of Chewelah, WA passed away on September 19, 2022 in Spokane, WA. He was born on August 3, 1935 in Dayton, WA, the son of Herschel Samuel and Ella Viola (Stearns) Bauman.
Clancy was raised and attended school in Dayton, WA where he graduated as a 12-year senior in 1955. He then began working as a meat cutter for a local company. On June 22, 1956, Clancy married Clettis Elaine Mathes and they relocated to Walla Walla, WA where they began a family. While in Walla Walla, Clancy worked as a cutter in the meat department of Albertsons. He moved with his family to Kennewick in 1963, then Yakima for a short time, followed by Spokane, WA in 1968. Clancy worked for Albertson in all of these communities totaling over 15 years with the company. During their last year in Spokane, he transferred to Hygrade and continued his trade. Clancy and Clettis took the opportunity to purchase Jenne's Cold Storage in Chewelah in 1972 and opened their business as Bauman's Custom Meats. Together they operated the business for 32 years until selling the business in 2004. They then moved from the business residence and retired to a home on the Chewelah Golf Course. Only last year, did they move to the Eagles Nest in Chewelah where they enjoyed a lighter element of home care responsibilities and increased ease.
Clancy was a man whose heart was dedicated to the Chewelah Community. He served for over 10 years on the Chewelah City Council before running for Mayor and serving in that role for 12 years. Clancy also served as a board member of the Chewelah Golf and Country Club for over 20 years. His dedication was unwavering to the Chewelah Cougar High School Football team and to keep him close to the field (and a touch less vocal), they gave him the honor of running the chains for all local games including traveling to the game at the University of Idaho. In over 25 years, Clancy only missed one game… His other passion included fishing and he cast a line in nearly every local water plus a yearly trip to the ocean for the larger catch! Clancy coached youth baseball in Spokane and continued with Bob Hoxie in town as another opportunity to be involved as well. A good time was often found at the local casino as well as a bit of coaching during each grandchild's first visit following their 18 th birthdays. At the age of 70, he was retired from the Chewelah Fire Department after 20 years of response and service. In short, Clancy loved Chewelah and lead with his heart. He may not have been agreed with, but his motives for a better community were irrefutable. He was vibrant, giving and full of life. With a smile, laugh and genuine heart, Clancy offered his best… always.
Clancy's fraternal memberships included Chewelah Kiwanis and the Elks Lodge while in Spokane.
He was preceded in death by a grandson, Troy Bauman; three brothers, Donny, Virgil and Jimmy; 3 sisters, Maxine, Dorothy and Barbara; and both parents.
Clancy is survived by his wife of 66 years, Clettis Bauman of Chewelah, WA; three children, Karla Dahl (John) of Spokane, WA, Gene Bauman (Lynnette) of Chewelah, WA, Shellie Edin of Spokane, WA; ten grandchildren, Gale, Tyler, Ashley, Alex, Jordan, Amy, Andrew, Nathan, Lacey and Chloe; 13 great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephew and extended family.
At this time, Clancy's family will gather privately to remember him. Memorial contributions may be given to the Shriner's Children's Hospital. Please visit the online memorial and sign the guestbook at www.danekasfuneralchapel.com . Danekas Funeral Chapel and Crematory is entrusted with the arrangements.
