Gregory Leroy Chambers
Gregory Leroy Chambers, age 65 a longtime resident of Colville, WA passed away on March 4, 2023 in Colville due to complications of Glioblastoma Brain Cancer. Greg was born on August 3, 1957 in Yakima, WA the son of LeRoy Dale and Patricia Ann (Strawn) Chambers.
He was raised in Yakima where he attended the Seventh Day Adventist Schools in Yakima and Auburn. He spent a large amount of his youth with his Grandmother Dorothy Chambers. 1975, he moved with his family to Brookings, Oregon, where he spent many hours playing on the beach and rocky cliffs with his sisters. He earned his GED in 1976. Greg then followed in his father's footsteps and enlisted in the U.S. Army. After completing basic training, his time in services was brief, due to the lack of a duty assignment he had enlisted to fulfill. Following an honorable discharge from the Army, he spent several years working various jobs and attending college.
On July 5, 1981, He married Diana Freeman in Republic, WA. They had two children, Krista Lee Chambers on February 1, 1983 and Shira Dawn Chambers on February 1, 1985. Greg spent the next several years doing various jobs including the Activities Director at the Curlew Job Corp. In the mid 1980's he moved his family to Redding, California. It is there where he discovered his interest in computers and started taking classes. He moved back to Washington in 1990 and opened his own computer store in Colville. He and Diana later divorced.
Greg served many years as a volunteer firefighter and first responder for Joint Fire District Ferry 3 - Stevens 8 and also the Colville Fire department. He also served many years as a volunteer EMT with the Stevens County Sheriff's Ambulance. While assisting in an EMT class, Greg met Sherry Burkhart. Soon a friendship led to the exchange of vows On Aug. 29, 1998. They became an ambulance team and a team for life. Greg worked a full-time job while volunteering. Greg also served as the Colville Councilmember at large from January 2020 to December 2021. He worked at Stevens County, first in the Assessor's office, then in the IT Department. He later spent several years as the IT Manager at NEWMG. He eventually returned to the Stevens County IT department. Following his diagnosis with Glioblastoma Brain Cancer on July 1, 2021, his rapid decline in health required he take an early retirement on December 31, 2021.
He enjoyed road trips and sightseeing with his wife throughout the Pacific Northwest, especially on their motorcycle. When possible, he favored accommodations where they could stay and sip on the artistry of local brew masters and vintners. Greg had a passion for computers and tech-tinkering at home where he built websites, played video games, and adorned his home with the latest in smart devices and cool gadgetry. He also dabbled as a "drone pilot" and was pursuing a license to become a Commercial FAA-Certified Drone Pilot. Greg was well known for his kindnesses, soft demeanor, and patience. He was a selfless man with a calm, cool and dependable nature complimented on occasion with a touch of stubborn.
Greg was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his wife of nearly 25 years, Sherry Chambers, at the home; daughters, Krista Thurston of Kennewick, WA, Shira (Robert) Reid of Spokane Valley, WA; two grandchildren, Elayna and Eli Thurston; sisters, Karen Chambers of Kettle Falls, WA and Valerie (Timothy) Ewert of Deer Park, WA and host of extended family and friends.
Please join in honoring Gregory with a time of gathering and visitation from 1-5 p.m. on Wednesday, March 8, 2023 at the Danekas Funeral Chapel and Crematory in Colville, WA followed by the memorial service at 3:00 p.m., Saturday, March 25, 2023 at the Calvary Church on Highway 395 just north of Colville. Greg will be laid to rest at the Mountain View Park Cemetery in Colville. Memorial contributions may be given to the charity of your choice.
