Evangeline E. Newton
Evangeline E. Newton (Vangie) passed away in Spokane, Washington on Monday, April 24, 2023. She was born in Wishek, North Dakota, October 21, 1927 to the late George and Maggie (Rott) Freund.
Vangie spent her childhood in North Dakota. At the age of 14, the family moved to Spokane, Washington for one year and Vangie attended North Central High School her freshman year. They then moved to Omak, Washington where she graduated from Omak High School. She met the love of her life, Ben Newton at a church youth event. After Ben returned from military service in the Navy during World War II, they renewed their friendship and married on June 24,1947.
Before they were married, they both attended Northwest Bible Institute in Seattle. Vangie worked as a live-in nanny for a family and Ben worked in a gas station. After getting married and graduating from college, Ben worked in construction and Vangie worked in catering at the University of Washington. They lived in Seattle and raised their family until 1971 when they moved to Colville, Washington. They purchased a farm on the Williams Lake Road where they lived in an old log cabin while Ben built their dream home. They spent the next 16 years enjoying their farm and sharing it with family and friends from across the state, until Ben passed away in 1987. After his passing, Vangie sold the farm and moved into a house in Colville.
During their time in Colville, both Ben and Vangie attended Colville Assembly of God Church and were very involved in the ministries there. Vangie was involved in the Women's Ministries and was the President for many years. She also loved to sew for her family and she was an avid quilter. She belonged to the Coville Piece Makers Quilting Guild for many years.
Vangie was preceded in death by her husband, Ben and her parents. She is survived by her sons, Jim Newton (Vickie) of Cumming, GA, David (Debbie) of Gifford, WA, daughter, Patty (Jack) Shaver of Spring City, TN, seven grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
