Kettle Falls
In Loving Memory of Dave Duane Elwess
June 4, 1973 – April 5, 2025
Dave Duane Elwess was born on June 4, 1973, in Spokane, Washington, to Rick and Susan
Elwess. Though born in the city, Dave spent his entire life in the Kettle Falls area, where his
deep love for the outdoors shaped the man he became.
A true outdoorsman, Dave found joy and freedom in the woods. Whether he was riding ATVs,
hunting, fishing, shed hunting (especially on the Rez), or simply driving the backroads with a
cold beer and a buddy by his side, Dave was in his element. Those who knew him best knew that
a good day meant swapping stories, sharing laughs, and making new memories, often long into
the night.
Nicknamed "Super Dave" and "High Performance," Dave was truly one of a kind. He wasn't just
the guy you'd have a beer with—he was the guy you'd end up sharing stories with until the sun
came up. He was a loyal friend, a great listener, and someone who made everyone feel like they
belonged.
One of Dave's proudest achievements was harvesting five bull elk in five consecutive hunting
seasons—an impressive feat that spoke to his skill and passion. Alongside his rugged,
outdoorsman persona, Dave also had a quiet artistic side that blossomed during high school art
class, making his parents proud with his natural talent and creativity.
A graduate of Kettle Falls High School; Dave went on to earn a Forestry Degree from Spokane
Community College. Over the years, he held a variety of hardworking jobs including working in
the orchard at Peachcrest, helicopter logging, directional drilling, N.W. Alloys, beer distribution
(which came in handy on the weekends), and as a ranch hand at Lightning C Ranch, among
others. Dave didn't work for status or luxury—he worked to support the lifestyle he loved.
To Dave, his family and friends were the most important part of his life. He loved spending time
with those closest to him, and his nieces and nephews absolutely adored their Uncle Dave. All
the kids did—he had that kind of presence. His kind heart, quick wit, and playful personality
could light up a room, and he made sure every kid felt special around him.
He was also incredibly close to his little sister and brother. He took them under his wing at a
young age, making sure they got out of town and into the outdoors to experience the life he loved
so much. Those shared adventures became some of their most treasured memories.
Dave will be deeply missed but never forgotten. If you ever feel like talking to him or just want
to sit and remember the good times, grab a six-pack, hop in a four-wheel drive, and head to one
of his favorite spots—the top of White Mountain, Huckleberry Mountain, or Hells Gate.
He'll be there, waiting for you.
We will be gathering to celebrate Dave's life the way he lived it—laughing, telling stories, and
raising a cold one—on July 12, 2025, at Barstow. Details to follow.
