In Loving Memory

Davee Lee Pullen

DaVee Pullen was born DaVee Whaling in Reed City Michigan, February 12 th , 1954. She was one of seven children, six girls and one boy. She grew up on a dairy farm, but despite all that hard work still found time to play basketball, ruck track, and twirl a baton with the band. Her childhood finding Pink Lady's Slippers and other wildflowers in the woods began a lifelong love of nature. She went to college for nursing back when nurses still had to wear little white dresses and hats, and became an LPN and then an RN. She and Owen Pullen knew each other since they were twelve, but started dating in high school. They got married at the age of 22, and went on to have many adventures together. They traveled for Owen's work in the Forest Service, living in Wyoming, and Northern California, before they returned home to Michigan long enough to have their first child, their daughter Jennifer in 1986. Not long after, they moved to Chewelah WA and purchased Quartzite Mountain Nursery. DaVee had a deep love of nature, travel, and kids. She homeschooled her two children, Jennifer and Nathan, and she and Owen took them all over, even as far as Australia. She was an active member of the Chewelah community. She helped lead a Cub Scout troupe, participated in the Melody Riders 4-H club, founded the Hidden Valley 4-H club, taught Sunday School for decades, supported the Arts, and was a joyful member of the UCC church. She loved hiking, the water (she was an avid snorkeler and swimmer), gardening, cooking, sewing, and horseback riding. She was known for having friends across widely varied groups of people. She was boundlessly kind and friendly. She had many passions, among them taking care of her 70 acres of land, waging a tireless effort to eradicate invasive species so native species could thrive. For as long as she could, she walked that land, delighting in the return of Lupin, Sago Lilies, and Milkweed, which in turn fostered habitat for butterflies and birds. The desire to do what was right and create a safe environment for others (human and non-human), infused her choices. She took that nurturing joyful energy into all aspects of her life, from her love of snorkeling, riding horses, reading, or cooking food to nourish the bodies and spirits of her family. She is survived by her husband Owen, her son Nathan, her daughter Jennifer, and Jennifer's husband Chris. While memorial donations are not requested, if you feel the need or desire, please donate to the Chewelah UCC church, or the Chewelah Food Bank.
