Betty Maria
Norris
Feb 2, 1930 — Jun 29, 2023
Ford
Betty Maria Norris Betty Maria Norris, age 93, a lifetime resident of Springdale, WA passed away on June 29, 2023. Betty was born on February 2, 1930 in Springdale, the daughter of Ernest Ray and Myrtle Eleanor (Brown) Strickler.
She was raised on the family farm outside of Springdale, WA and was one of nine children in her family. Betty attended school in Springdale throughout most of her education. She transferred to Oaksdale High School after a spirited departure from Springdale. It was from Oaksdale she graduated in 1948. Oscar Norris Jr. was a young man whom Betty had known in the community. When he returned from the service they began dating and soon married. Together they ventured into farming and a family. She worked long days on the farm, tending to the horses, chickens, sheep, milking the cows and driving tractor. Betty cooked large meals for her family of 7 on her wood stove and drawn water from the well handpump. Homemade bread, cookies and her apple pies were favorite additions to special meals. Much of her care was offered through the work of her hands with the hand washed and wrung clothes, hand churned butter and meals made from scratch. There wasn't much
time for rest, but when moments allowed, she read the farm journals, Time Magazine and Patrick McManus books. In the evenings, the radio broadcast of the Spokane Indians Baseball games could often be heard in the home. Her life was her family and she loved to watch it grow into grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren. Oscar and Betty celebrated 49 years and 11 months of marriage before his passing in 2001. She remained on the farm near Springdale until moving to Ford, WA where she could receive the assistance of her family.
In her later years, Betty enjoyed the oldies… old country classics, Gunsmoke, Bonanza and Lone Ranger television shows and reruns of game shows aired long ago. Golf and baseball games also lit her T.V. screen. Her Charlie Brown Christmas Trees, homemade eggnog and a home filled with family on Thanksgiving and Christmas were favorite moments. Grandkids visited often and were spoiled with soda pop, grandpa's homemade ice cream and grandma's peanut butter cookies. Memories of her frequent laughter, hugs, hand pats and favorite expressions give way to smiles and remember-when's. Betty was a bit bullheaded, spunky and stubborn which balanced her zest and kind character. Local drives, crosswords, puzzles, rodeos, carrot cake and kids, these things Betty so too enjoyed.
Betty was also preceded in death by her 7 sisters and 1 brother.
She is survived by her five children, Dale Norris (Shannon) of Springdale, WA, Susan Burya of Salt Lake City, UT, Janet Covington of West End, WA, Ellen Sack of Springdale, WA, Sharon Thompson (Mike) of Ford, WA; 14 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren, 6 great great grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and a host of extended family.
The graveside service for Mrs. Betty Maria Norris will begin at 10:00 a.m., Monday, July 10, 2023 at the Springdale Cemetery in Springdale, WA, with a potluck luncheon to follow at the Springdale Grange. Memorial contributions may be given to the Springdale Food Bank. Please visit the online memorial and sign the guestbook at www.danekasfuneralchapel.com.
